Brooks, Minn. man pleads not guilty to child torture, among other violent crimes – Grand Forks Herald

RED LAKE COUNTY, Minn. — A Brooks, Minn., man waived his Wednesday Nov. 6 general hearing and pleaded not guilty to three charges, including child torture.

Joseph Cole Wulfson, 34,

is accused of beating a 12-year-old child in July.

The alleged attack, which was filmed, showed Wulfson headbutting a child, then punching and pushing him for about two and a half minutes, according to a probable cause statement filed in the case.

Wulfson allegedly hit the child about 25 times and while doing so called them names and told them to “get angry.”

The boy’s brother told law enforcement that the attack was caused by the 12-year-old leaving the knives too close to the edge of the counter while doing dishes.

When interviewed by law enforcement, Wulfson allegedly said the child lied, so he disciplined him and agreed the discipline was excessive.

Wulfson is charged with felony child torture, a felony, malicious punishment of a child and felony domestic battery.

The felony charge carries a maximum sentence of 25 years, but Minnesota sentencing guidelines recommend between two and nine years, depending on the defendant’s criminal history.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for December 18 at 1 p.m.
