Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah appeared before the Lokayukta police on Wednesday in response to the summons issued to him for hearing in the MUDA land allotment case. On October 25, they questioned his wife, who was named as accused number 2. The CM, who was named as accused number 1 in the FIR registered by the Lokayukta police, is facing allegations of illegalities in allotment of 14 seats to his wife, Parvathi BM, by Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA).

Meanwhile, the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday issued a notice to Siddaramaiah and others on a writ petition filed by RTI activist Snehamayi Krishna, seeking a direction to transfer the case to the CBI. Justice M Nagaprasanna, who also served notice on Parvathi, Swamy, the Union of India, the state government, the CBI, the Lokayukta and others, directed the Lokayukta to register the investigation conducted so far in the case. The court posted the next hearing on November 26.

What is the case?

On September 30, the ED filed an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) to book the CM and others taking cognizance of the Lokayukta FIR and is also probing the case.

In the MUDA land allotment case, it is alleged that Siddaramaiah’s wife was allotted 14 compensatory plots in an upmarket area of Mysuru (3rd and 4th stages of Vijayanagar development) which had a higher value of of the property compared to the location of her land which had been ‘acquired’ by MUDA.

MUDA allotted plots to Parvathi under a 50:50 ratio in lieu of 3.16 acres of her land where she developed a residential layout. Under the controversial scheme, MUDA allotted 50 percent of developed land to land losers in lieu of undeveloped land acquired from them for forming residential schemes. It is alleged that Parvathi had no legal title to this 3.16 acres of land in survey number 464 of Kasare village on the outskirts of Mysuru.

Following the High Court order, a special court ordered a Lokayukta police inquiry against Siddaramaiah and directed to submit the inquiry report by December 24. Meanwhile, Parvathi wrote to MUDA to cancel 14 seats allotted to her and MUDA accepted her. .

Congress provides support

On CM Siddaramaiah’s deposition before the Lokayukta police, Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge said, “Why should the CM resign? The state BJP president has an ED case against him. ECR has been recorded. Did he resign? It is a very serious crime… This is politically motivated, everyone knows… CM has clearly said that he is politically motivated, he is a law abiding citizen and will do whatever the Constitutional institutions asked him to do. It’s sure to come from that.”
