Man wanted for attempted murder assaults officers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police say a man wanted for attempted first-degree murder is now facing assault charges after punching at least two police officers who were trying to arrest him.

MPD said members of the Fugitive Task Force went to a home in the 2300 block of Lowell Avenue Tuesday morning to pick up Joshua Avery, 33, on an outstanding warrant when they struck.

According to police, an officer was preparing to force open the front door when Avery came to the door. Officers said he gave Avery strong verbal commands to get out with his hands up, and Avery opened the door and hit him twice in the head.

Another member of the fugitive squad said he tried to restrain Avery and Avery punched him in the face. The officer said he was forced to pull Avery over to arrest him.

Avery was also wanted for domestic assault and unlawful possession of a weapon, but police have not released details of the charges. He is currently being held without bail.
