Election Day ends with near-record heat followed by rain

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Some serious heat is here to stay until the end of the Eight-Day Planner. We’re vying for many record temperatures ahead of *some* rain on Wednesday. We have a chance to extend Rafael’s tropical rain into the weekend, but the exact timing of the rain is still being worked out.

For now, enjoy the warm sun!

WHAT TO EXPECT

We are blessed with record warm weather – once again. We will be pushing 80 degrees by the end of election day. Should be dry by tonight and a little windy. The previous wind advisory was allowed to expire in time. Some rain showers return Wednesday; that said, don’t expect a lot of soaking. The best places for rain should be in the upper reaches of the Smoky Mountains along with Wayne and Fentress counties. A cold front is stalling in Middle Tennessee, while a large bowling ball of rain lingers longer in the Atlanta-Columbia area.

Still, we’re approaching record heat Wednesday and Thursday, even with those raindrops.

Chances of rain Thursday and Friday are pretty low, but there are plenty of outdoor events for UT’s Homecoming Week. Keep a close eye on the First Alert Weather app as we continuously update the forecast.

Looking ahead

The big question is WHEN will the rain hit our region this weekend? And could Rafael bring us some rain as the storm begins to move into the vicinity of another, stronger cold front? It is still too early to say for sure when it will rain this weekend, but it is certain that the overall chance of rain is increasing.

Other than that, we are well above the averages for lows and highs. If you protected your plants during the short October cold spell, you get an extra month of growing season, with no freezing temperatures anywhere near anytime soon.
