Convicted NJ Stalker Gets 10 Years After Harassing Victim

The NJ man repeatedly violated the restraining order

The convicted criminal receives a long prison sentence

A 50-year-old Long Branch man has been sentenced to an extended 10-year state prison term in connection with the assault of a female victim and continued harassment despite a restraining order against him, the prosecutor announced of Monmouth County, Raymond Santiago.

Brett Roach, Sr., had previously been convicted of charges of simple disorderly assault, third-degree witness tampering, third-degree stalking and fourth-degree contempt.

After an August jury trial, Roach was convicted last month in Monmouth County Superior Court.

Eatontown Police responded to a report of a domestic dispute on Stony Hill Road on January 27, 2023.

Responding officers learned that there was a verbal dispute that turned physical and once police were called, the defendant fled the scene.

The victim in the case was granted a temporary restraining order — and when Roach returned home the next day, he was arrested.

From there, he was held in the Monmouth County Jail pending arraignment.

In the next two and a half months alone, he contacted the victim over a hundred times – by phone, through third parties and by mail, all in violation of the restraining order.

Roach repeatedly asked the victim to drop the order and the charges.

Instead of a two-stage trial on additional charges, he ultimately pleaded guilty to third-degree stalking and fourth-degree contempt.

The stalking charge was upgraded from fourth degree to third degree because of harassment.

The judge granted the state’s motion for an extended discretionary term, so Roach was eligible to be sentenced in the second degree range.

He also faces a 2-year period of conditional ineligibility.

“People detained by court orders must comply with these legal orders, especially in matters of domestic violence. The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and our local law enforcement partners will seek to enforce these restraining orders and provide the protection these victims deserve during the critical moments when they try to separate themselves from their perpetrators.” Santiago said in a written statement.
