When do polls close in each state? Timeline of Election Day 2024

The 2024 general elections are here and states will soon start collecting votes. Election results will not be reported by each state until their polling stations close, in an effort not to influence people’s decisions.

If you’re planning to vote in person on Nov. 5 or are just curious when the election might start rolling out, here are the polling hours for each state — including when polls open and close.

Alabama

Alabama is covered by both the Eastern and Central time zones. Polls will be open between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM local time on Election Day.

Alaska

Alaska is the state with the most recent poll closures relative to the rest of the country. Polling stations are open from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm local time.

Because Alaska is in both the Alaska and Hawaii-Aleutian time zones, the latest poll closes will be at 1 a.m. Eastern.

Arizona

Polls in Arizona, a potential swing state, will be open on Election Day from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time, or 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

Arkansas

Voting opens at 7:30 a.m. Central Time and closes at 7:30 p.m

California

The state with the most electoral votes, California polls will be open on Election Day from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Pacific, meaning East Coast votes won’t be reported until after 11:00 p.m. east.

COLORADO

Polls in Colorado will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Mountain Time.

Connecticut

Connecticut Election Day hours are 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM Eastern.

Delaware

Polls will be open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM Eastern on Election Day in Delaware.

District of Columbia

Voters in Washington, DC will be able to vote on Election Day between 7:00 AM and 8:00 PM Eastern.

Florida

Florida, which leaned Republican in the last election, is one of the Electoral College’s biggest prizes. Polls will be open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM Eastern on Election Day.

Georgia

As of 2020, Georgia is considered one of the closest swing states in the country. Polls will be open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM Eastern on Election Day.

Hawaii

In Hawaii, polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. local time, meaning on the East Coast, returns won’t be reported until after midnight.

Idaho

Polls will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. local time in Idaho, another state covered by two time zones, Mountain and Pacific.

Illinois

Polls in Illinois, a state with a large number of electoral votes, will be open from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM Central.

Indian

Indiana is among the earliest states to close polls on election night. Polls will be open in the Hoosier State from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time. While most of Indiana is in the Eastern Time Zone, parts of the state are on Central Time.

Iowa

Iowa polls will be open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM Central.

Kansas

Polls in Kansas will be open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM Central on Election Day.

Kentucky

Like neighboring Indiana, polls are open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Kentucky time. About half of the state is in the Eastern Time Zone, while the other half is in the Central Time Zone.

Louisiana

Polls in Louisiana will be open from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM Central Time on Election Day.

Tomorrow

In Maine, where Electoral College votes are divided by House districts, the polls will be open between 6:00 AM and 8:00 PM Eastern, however, in municipalities with fewer than 100 people, the polls will close after each voter registered voted.

Maryland

Polls in Maryland will open at 7 AM and close at 8 PM Eastern on Election Day.

Massachusetts

Although municipalities can choose to open the polls as early as 5:45 a.m. Eastern, polls in Massachusetts must be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Michigan

A swing state in 2016 and 2020, Michigan will once again be one of the most closely watched states in the nation. Polls will be open on Election Day from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM Eastern.

Minnesota

The home state of the Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim WalzMinnesota polls on Election Day will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Central Time.

Mississippi

Emergency rooms in Mississippi will be open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM Central Time on Election Day.

Missouri

Missouri polls will be open for 13 hours on Election Day, from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Central Time.

mountain

Polling places in Montana will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Mountain Time, except for polling places with fewer than 400 registered voters, which may be open until noon and must close if all voters registered voted.

Nebraska

The second state with split electoral votes, polls in Nebraska will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for parts of the state located in the Central Time Zone and from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in parts that use Mountain Time.

Nevada

Nevada is another potential swing state and will have polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time on Election Day, becoming the latest state expected to close its polls relative to the rest of the country. Nevada is almost entirely in the Pacific Time Zone, meaning it won’t start reporting results until 10pm ET.

New Hampshire

New Hampshire polling place hours vary by municipality, but will not close before 7:00 PM Eastern.

New Jersey

New Jersey polls on Election Day will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

New Mexico

New Mexico polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Mountain Time.

The fourth largest election prize in the country, New York polls will be open from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM Eastern.

North Carolina

Expected to be one of the closest swing states in 2024, polls in North Carolina will be open on Election Day from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm Eastern.

North Dakota

North Dakota polling hours vary by county, according to the Secretary of State’s Office. Times for individual polling stations can be found Here.

Ohio

Once a swing state, Ohio, the home state of the GOP vice presidential nominee JD Vancewill have its polls open from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm est.

Oklahoma

Oklahoma polls will be open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM Central.

Oregon

Oregon polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. local time. Most of the state is in the Pacific Time Zone, although part of the eastern part of the state is in the Mountain Time Zone.

Pennsylvania

The state most likely to decide the winner of the election, polls in Pennsylvania will be open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM Eastern.

Rhode Island

Rhode Island polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

South Carolina

Polls in South Carolina open at 7:00 AM and close at 7:00 PM EST.

Tennessee

Tennessee polling station hours vary by county.

Texas

Polls in Texas, the state with the largest number of electoral votes, are open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time. Most of the state is in the Central Time Zone, although three counties in the far western part of the state observe Mountain Time.

Utah

Utah polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Mountain Time.

Vermont

Depending on the municipality, Vermont polls may open between 5 and 10 a.m. Eastern. All polling stations will close at 7 p.m

virgin

In Virginia, polls will be open from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM Eastern Time.

Washington

Voting hours vary in Washington, a state where every voter receives their ballot by mail. Ballots must be left in a ballot box by 8:00 PM Pacific Time on November 5th.

West Virginia

Polls in West Virginia are open from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm Eastern.

Wisconsin

Polls will be open on Election Day from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Central Time in Wisconsin, one of three key swing Rust Belt states.

Wyoming

Wyoming polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Mountain Time.
