Arizona political officials are tackling misinformation ahead of Election Day

PHOENIX (AZ Family) — State and local election leaders are again warning voters about misinformation ahead of Election Day. This comes after Arizona was in the spotlight over allegations of voter fraud and election theft in the last presidential election.

Just a few hours before election day, Arizona’s Democratic Secretary of State, Adrian Fontes, addressed a new video posted on X by a group called the Foundation to Battle Injustice.

The video claims to have obtained testimony from a former Fontes aide who claimed that state leaders are planning to rig and rig the 2024 election in favor of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

According to US and European intelligence sources, the group is behind several disinformation efforts coming from Russia.

The “foundation” was founded by a Russian oligarch and is part of a multi-pronged disinformation effort that has increasingly shifted from false claims about the war in Ukraine to focus on the US presidential election from 2024.

The Russian woman in the video who claims to be a journalist has served more than two years in a US prison on money laundering charges.

Fontes called the video and its claims “completely false, false and fraudulent.”

“We’re happy to work with people on this, but we also understand that a lot of the misinformation and disinformation like this video is coming from,” he said. “We suspect this is also coming from foreign governments and they want to harm us by dividing us. They don’t want us to believe in each other. They want us to believe these conspiracy theories are true.”

The Department of Elections also addressed the video and warned voters that people outside the country want to cause mayhem.

“And first of all we have our eyes wide open about it. We have incredible cybersecurity teams in both Maricopa County and Arizona,” said Supervisor Bill Gates.

With Arizona under a national microscope, the United States Department of Justice will also monitor polls in the state to ensure compliance with federal voting laws. They will work with state and local election officials throughout Election Day, monitoring Apache, Maricopa, Pima and Yuma counties.

“We understand what’s at stake, but we also question people when they see things out there on social media that seem a little fishy. It might not be real. And that’s why we’ve been telling people for years now, to go to the trusted sources for us,” Gates said.

The Department of Justice will also be in other states, but not all are cooperating.
