Penn State University police are investigating the Nov. 2 incident Jason Kelce and an unidentified college football fan at the school, PEOPLE can confirm.

Penn State verified Monday, Nov. 4, that university police and public safety are looking into when the 36-year-old former NFL star cracked the phone of a shaker that seemed to summon Kelce’s brother Travis a homophobic slur.

The university has not said whether it is investigating Jason, the football fan, or how the incident happened.

PEOPLE has reached out to representatives for both Jason and ESPN.

Jason, who was on campus for an ESPN appearance College game day during the Penn State-Ohio State game, he can be seen in several videos posted on social media surrounded by fans as he made his way inside the stadium holding a can of beer.

In now viral images shared on X (formerly Twitter)the football fan is seen approaching Jason and asking, “Hey Kelce. How does your brother feel about dating a bastard Taylor Swift?” the man asked, using the slur to refer to Travis, 35, who has been dating Swift, 34, since 2023.

Seconds later, Jason returned, grabbed the man’s phone from his hands, and smashed it to the ground. The NFL alum then stood in front of the man and said, “Who’s the bastard now?” as other people seemed to intervene.

The owner of the phone, who was wearing a Penn State hoodie at the time of the incident, could be seen walking close behind and apparently recording Jason before the altercation.

“Looked like a Penn State student walking in on Kelce for no reason,” the original user X who posted the clip captioned it. “Wild Scene in State College.”

In footage shared by another user on X, apparently captured immediately after the phone was broken, the Penn State fan is seen walking through the crowd looking for his phone. At one point, he reportedly told Jason, “Give me the phone, bro.”
