Oklahoma City storm leaves several injured and buildings damaged

Reports of storm damage in the Oklahoma City metro area are on the rise.

After preliminary assessments, the National Weather Service in Norman rated a tornado that touched down in Valley Brook an EF-2.

FOX 25 was on the ground at Southeast 89th Street and South Sooner Road where a man was sleeping when his home was hit.

He said he was awakened by the sounds of damage, not the sounds of sirens.

The Oklahoma City Police Department (OKCPD) said in a Facebook post that residents should avoid Southeast 89th Street to I-240 from Sooner to Windwood Drive.

According to the Oklahoma City Fire Department (OKCFD), several structures were damaged.

In addition, OKCFD received reports of downed power lines, traffic lights and trees.

As of 7:50 a.m., OKCFD reported five people were transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

Governor Stitt addressed the damage on Twitter.

To report damage to your home or business, report it online at http://damage.ok.gov.

Mayor David Holt also made storm announcements on Twitter.

Holt stated in his posts,

Tornadoes reportedly touched down in OKC early this morning at approximately 1:30 a.m. Two areas with the worst damage are both in southeast OKC: 1) near Sooner Road and I-240 and 2) Triple X Road between SE 44th and SE 59th.

First responders arrived quickly on the scene and are continuing their response. They report no deaths, some injured and some homes badly damaged. Our thoughts are with our neighbors affected by this severe weather overnight.

Representative Stephanie Bice released the following statement on Twitter:

Senator Lankford also took to Twitter to address the tornadoes overnight.

As the sun rose this morning, I saw The Oklahoma Standard in action with neighbors, churches and non-profits already working to help. Unfortunately, it looks like we’re going to have more storms today, so stay safe and keep an eye on the weather.

This is a developing story.
