Chinese accounts linked to Russian election disinformation

Chinese accounts helped spread Russian disinformation campaigns designed to undermine the 2024 U.S. election, according to Atlantic Council research published Nov. 4.

US intelligence agencies have recently warned in which foreign adversaries engage influence campaigns to mislead voters before and during the 2024 election.

Analysts at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Laboratory have identified more videos related to Russia spreading false reports about the vote. Fake social media accounts in China helped amplify these videos, researchers said said.

These accounts previously focused on pro-China propaganda and have only recently shifted to US elections.

A report by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on October 2 said that Russia, China and Iran represented the most significant threats to the integrity of the upcoming presidential elections.

The report came a month after the US announced a sweep suppression of Russian propaganda outlets due to alleged election interference.

As American voters cast their ballots on Nov. 5, some of Russia’s interference tactics moved beyond online disinformation to disruption at the polls. Bomb threats originating in Russia targeted polling centers in several key states, prompting evacuations in some locations.
