Unprecedented floods in Spain have killed more than 215

VALENCIA, Spain – More than 215 people died in Spain as a result of unprecedented floods which ravaged the region, marking the deadliest weather disaster in the modern country history.

Pope Francis offered prayers for those who perished and their families on Friday families after the storm unleashed its fury on the east coast of the Iberian Peninsula, including the hard-hit region of Valencia.

“May God support those who suffer and those who bring relief. Our approach to the people of Valencia,” the pontiff said, speaking of the region that bore the brunt of the devastation.

The death toll rose to 217 on Sunday, with almost all of the deaths occurring in the Valencia region. Reuters reported. The process of searching and identifying the victims continues.

On Sunday, Spain’s King Felipe, Queen Letizia and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited one of the worst flooded areas.

The storm that wreaked havoc on Spain’s east coast dumped a year’s worth of rain in just eight hours. The mountain town of Chiva, west of Valencia, was inundated with 19.33 inches of rain in eight hours, with some areas recording rainfall rates of 6.5 inches per hour.

right Spanish Meteorological Agencythe south coast of Valencia again faced an extreme risk of heavy rain on Sunday, with rainfall rates of up to 3 inches per hour.

Over the weekend, emergency officials in Valencia battled false reports about the Aldaia Ravine overflowing. However, officials said the ravine was dry and there was no emergency.

More than 500 soldiers were deployed in Valencia to help survivors and search for the missing.

SEARCH FOR PEOPLE MISSING DUE TO FLOODING IN SPAIN CONTINUES

Thousands of volunteers from across the region rushed to help with recovery efforts on Friday. In the town of Pinanya, hundreds used shovels and brooms to clear mud from streets and buildings. Spanish rescuers opened a temporary morgue in a convention center and scrambled to reach areas still blocked by flooding.

Aerial footage from a military helicopter on Thursday showed widespread flooding continuing in Valencia. The Spanish Air and Space Force said the footage was filmed while the crew of an NH90 helicopter was engaged in a six-and-a-half-hour rescue mission.

Crews from Spain’s Military Emergency Unit (UME) were seen inspecting the damage and searching underground car parks and buildings on Thursday night using trained dogs.

A police officer was forced to use bedclothes to save his neighbor who was being dragged by floods in Valencia on Wednesday.

The Spanish National Police released a video showing cars submerged in the flooded waters. A woman can be seen in the water, hanging from sheets tied to a makeshift rope.

“Our colleague Daniel … being off duty last night managed to keep a neighbor afloat as she was being dragged by the current into the Benetuser,” police captioned the video. “Moments before, he saved another neighbor thanks to a rope he made out of sheets.”

The Ministry of Education said 22 municipalities would not be able to offer classes this week due to storm damage.

The disaster could become Europe’s biggest storm-related disaster in more than five decades.

In 2021, at least 185 people died from heavy flooding in Germany. Before that, 209 people died in Romania in 1970, and the floods in Portugal in 1967 killed almost 500 people.
