Clark Co. Polling Station claims to have seen the suspect connected to three fires

After hundreds of ballots were destroyed in arson attacks at the polls this week, poll watchers were hired by the Clark County Auditor’s office to provide 24/7 security leading up to Election Day.

An observer claims to have seen someone who looks like the suspect wanted in connection with incidents at the polls in Portland and Vancouver.

“I saw a man walk downtown and once he got close to the ballot box, he was yelling and swearing, and then he started pounding on the ballot box, both sides yelling and screaming,” said Jennifer Whitaker, a poll watcher. KATU and that he immediately called 911. “I know he definitely fits the description. He is 30-40 years old. He was, he was bald and the top of his hair was very, very short.”

Whitaker shared photos of the person he saw, but KATU is not sharing those images because they have not been corroborated by police.

Whitaker closely watched the ballot box at Fisher’s Landing in Vancouver.

“When the ballots caught fire and then they took them out and they fell to the ground. I was like, oh my God, somebody has to protect those ballots, it’s terrible,” she recalled after watching the viral video seen around the world that KATU photographer Evan Bell shot Monday morning.

Whitaker plans to watch the ballot every day until Election Day.

“Almost 80 percent of people when they come and I sit here, they wave or lift me up and they’re grateful,” she said/

She and several others were hired by the Clark County Auditor’s Office following the arson attacks on the boxes last Monday.

“At first it was exciting and it was kind of emotional because it was like, oh my God, I’m protecting myself,” Whitaker said. “And then it started to become, I started to feel stressed, because everything, like I’m nervous, you know, why are they sitting at the polls?”

A vigil was held Saturday where organizers encouraged others to promote voter safety.

Vancouver Mayor Anne McEnerney-Ogle attended the vigil. She confirmed that a security camera captured the alleged arsonist and that the video was turned over to authorities.

She also highlighted the growing support from many. “Both governors, Oregon and Washington, Tina Kotek called, we have our congresswomen, our senators and then the White House itself.” McEnerney-Ogle said.
