Three Hindus were detained “without incident” on the grounds of a local temple in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, sparking tension in the community as authorities did not disclose the charges against them, officials said Monday.

The incident occurs while local residents have gathered to celebrate and worship at the temple.

“Details of the arrest are still emerging and authorities have not yet disclosed specific charges,” they said.

According to witnesses, the police presence around the temple was increased as officers moved in to detain the three youths.

The identities of the detained men have not yet been released, officials said.

What did the temple officials say?

A temple spokesman expressed concern about the detention and urged community members to be patient while awaiting further details behind the incident.

“The community should remain patient as we await more information from the authorities,” the spokesperson said.

Surrey RCMP said the arrests were part of an ongoing investigation, but did not specify the case.

“This incident comes at a time when members of the community are calling for harmony and unity, and many hope that details will soon clarify the reasons behind today’s arrests,” officials said.

Local leaders have urged law enforcement to work with transparency, saying there is a need for trust between police and the community.

Khalistani extremists attack Hindu temple devotees

In particular, suspected Khalistani extremists assaulted devotees at a Hindu temple in Brampton, videos of which went viral on social media. The group of men holding Khalistani flags could be seen attacking people with sticks in front of the Hindu Sabha Mandir.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the “acts of violence” at the Hindu Sabha Mandir and said it was unacceptable.
