Jens Lehmann has spoken about a drink-driving saga at Oktoberfest that saw the former Arsenal goalkeeper’s license revoked.

The German etched his name into Gunners folklore after being the team’s number one goalkeeper during the Invincibles’ 2003-04 campaign.

But the 54-year-old found himself in hot water in September after he was pulled over by a police patrol in Munich’s Sendling district while under the influence.

The German was reported to be unsteady and smelling of alcohol and had to be taken to the police station for further testing as he was unable to perform breath tests. His license was then revoked.

Lehmann has now broken his silence on the incident and expressed his “regret” for his actions that day, Bild reports.

He said: “The truth was I made a mistake because I thought I could drive. That was not the case. I had 0.7 per mil.

“It was not a good move on my part and I regret it. I misjudged myself and drove two hours after the incident.

“If you have a BAC of 0.7 per mil, your driving license will be suspended for four weeks. And so it should be.

“Sometimes it was portrayed as if I was completely drunk, which was not the case at all. There is a sequel to this. We will see.

Lehmann was reportedly downing pints – a large mug of beer – of alcohol during celebrations in Munich on Sunday at the Bavarian beer festival party.

He is also said to have been seen dancing on benches in the Schutzenfest tent and is believed to be wearing traditional Bavarian dress.

A source told The Sun: “There are police officers lurking around Oktoberfest who are supposed to prevent drink driving.”

Senior prosecutor Anne Leiding said: “Mr. Lehmann was subjected to a police check on September 23, 2024 at around 1:30 a.m. due to his unusual driving behavior in a car in the central area of Munich.
