While the US presidential election is taking place, Americans are also voting for House representatives and senators.

Jamie Jameson traveled from Hawaii to Lancaster to campaign for her son, Democratic state senate candidate Trex Proffitt.

At an event inside the local Holiday Inn, the 77-year-old proudly wears a badge encouraging people to vote for her son and a Kamala Harris T-shirt.

The 77-year-old tells me she was part of the women’s rights movement and “can’t understand” why any woman would vote for Republicans — especially Donald Trump.

She canvassed, phone-banked and stood outside the local market with signs for Mr. Proffitt and Ms. Harris for weeks.

“When Republicans come around here, they make horrible remarks. A man called me a child killer,” she says.

She tells me that she has met several women who vote Democratic in secret because their families expect them to vote for Mr. Trump.

“There are a lot of women who have been suppressed and they don’t say anything, but I think they will all vote for her (Kamala Harris),” adds Ms Jameson.

“One of Trexx’s neighbors was walking her cat and said her husband was making her register and vote Republican and she wouldn’t. I just told him it was a secret ballot and he would never know how he voted.

“I believe in the women of our country. I think our country knows what is right.”
