A 14-year-old boy was shot in the stomach and a 17-year-old boy is facing charges in an accidental shooting in Waukegan Thursday, authorities said.

Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain said the two juveniles were handling firearms and pointing the guns at each other when the 17-year-old accidentally shot the 14-year-old in the stomach around 8 p.m. in the 1300 block of Walnut Street.

The 14-year-old was transported from the scene to an area hospital where he remains in stable condition.

The 14-year-old is expected to make a full recovery, Chastain said.

Two semi-automatic handguns were seized by police investigating the shooting.

The 17-year-old from Waukegan was charged by the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office with multiple weapons charges, including unlawful use of a weapon, UUW without a FOID card, UUW without a concealed carry permit, UUW by someone under age of 21 and reckless discharge of a firearm.

The 17-year-old was transferred to the Depke Juvenile Center in Vernon Hills, Chastain said.
