Law enforcement is asking pedestrians to be extra careful as it gets dark earlier due to the end of daylight saving time

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Law enforcement officials are advising the community to be more careful when walking or biking the streets as daylight savings time ends this weekend. Daylight saving time ends at 2am on Sunday

Nelson Garland walks his dog in the park all the time. He said other walkers need to be aware.

“Just do what makes sense. Don’t do anything stupid and move in front of the vehicles,” Garland said.

Joyce Nelson is a mountain and road cyclist and says she has a plan when she’s riding on the street.

“When we’re in a bunch, we always let a car know when there’s a car behind us and go into a single file,” Nelson said.

Daylight saving time is about more than changing batteries in smoke alarms

Sergeant Ben Haines of the Springfield Police Department is urging drivers to take a look at their cars now.

“You should inspect your lights, probably once a week would be a good thing just to make sure they’re all working properly so you can see clearly,” Sgt. Haines said.

If you are a pedestrian crossing the street, remember to use marked crosswalks.

“Cross with the signals, don’t cross them,” Sergeant Haines said.

He also recommends walking toward traffic, not against it, so you can see oncoming cars and not be surprised from behind.
