Spain’s latest floods: New red alert in Spanish region – as residents told to ‘prepare for more deaths’ | World News

Crews continue to search for bodies in cars and buildings trapped by flooding in Spain.

The floods have caused at least 158 deaths, with 155 deaths confirmed in the eastern Valencia region alone.

But an unknown number of people are still missing and more victims may be found.

“Unfortunately, there are dead people in some vehicles,” said Spanish transport minister Oscar Puente.

While the greatest suffering was caused in the regions near the city of Valencia, the storms also unleashed their fury on huge areas of the southern and eastern coast of the Iberian peninsula.

Two deaths were confirmed in the neighboring region of Castilla La Mancha and one in southern Andalusia.

Spain has been in a drought for almost two years, meaning that when the deluge occurred, the ground was so hard that it couldn’t absorb the rain, leading to flash floods.

The violent weather event surprised regional government officials.

And Spain’s national weather service said more rain had fallen in the Valencian city of Chiva in eight hours than in 20 months.
