St. George firefighter recovers from antique fire engine crash

SF. GEORGE, Utah — A firefighter from St. George was still in the hospital after the 1940s fire truck he was driving lost its brakes Wednesday and was hit by an SUV.

In the Wednesday morning crash at the corner of Deserts Edge Drive and Desert Canyons Parkway — about a half-mile from the Utah-Arizona border — a 76-year-old fire truck lost its brakes and collided with an SUV . The St. George firefighter who was driving the ceremonial vehicle has since been in the hospital, receiving minor back surgery and also a ticket for running a stop sign.

The Washington County sheriff’s deputy handling the investigation and St. George told Fox 13 the 1948 Ahrens Fox fire pump is a display piece that was on hand Tuesday for the grand opening of the department’s new 13,000-square-foot state. -art station and training center in the Desert Canyons area, about a mile and a half from the St. George.

According to the deputy, the firefighter was descending this downhill section of Desert Edge Drive to Desert Canyons when the brakes failed. The engine went through the stop sign and a Ford SUV traveling on the highway struck the 1948 fire pump head-on on the driver’s side.

While the driver of the SUV, its sole passenger, was uninjured, firefighter Brandon Redd was transported to St. George.

He received a procedure Thursday that put a special cement in his vertebrae today and was expected to go home Thursday evening.

Redd was also ticketed for running a stop sign.

He also said that even if a driver loses his brakes and loses control, he is held liable for an accident if he runs a stop sign or traffic light. He added that the accident is still under investigation.

Fire Chief St. George, Robert Stoker, says that the historic fire engine is history. A total loss.
