Veteran wants out of Buffalo, defensive trade target, ownership change

The Buffalo Bills I’m in great shape for mid-2024 NFL season.

With a dominant 31-10 win over Seattle Seahawks In what was easily their best overall performance of the year last Sunday, Buffalo improved to 6-2 and has a commanding lead in the AFC East, as every other team in the division has won just two games.

Josh Allen is a legitimate NFL MVP candidate. James Cook is having another strong season. Amari Cooper, Khalil Shakir, rookie Keon Coleman and tight ends Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox are quickly becoming one of the league’s best receiving units. The defense has improved tremendously in recent weeks and will only get better with Von Miller back.

So once again, the Bills are in great shape as they head into their Week 9 showdown with Miami Dolphins

That said, though, Buffalo could still be looking to improve its roster before Tuesday’s trade deadline. They obviously already did with the acquisition of Cooper a few weeks ago, and while another move probably wouldn’t be as big, there are still some intriguing candidates out there where we’ll start things off.

While Buffalo’s defense held opponents to just 18.2 points per game, it also gave up plenty of yards on the week, allowing 208.1 passing yards and 120.2 rushing yards per game.

Overall, the Bills need more help against the run than against the pass. That’s not to say some upgrades in the secondary wouldn’t be welcome, but getting support to stop the run is a more pressing need at this point.

And longtime Sporting News NFL writer Vinnie Iyer thinks so Las Vegas Raiders linebacker Robert Spillane could be the answer.

“The Bills have been hurt without Matt Milano (biceps) in the secondary and Terrel Bernard (ankle) with multiple injuries, Iyer wrote. “Spillane can clean up this mess for Sean McDermott.”

This move makes sense on almost every level. While there is hope that Milan can bounce back this season, it is not a guarantee. And even if he does, adding a veteran like Spillane gives Buffalo more depth, which is never a bad thing.

The Bills wouldn’t want to rely on him in pass coverage, as Pro Football Focus’ grade in that regard is 47.0. However, against the run, Spillane, who is tied for the fourth most tackles in the league with 79, has a run defense grade of 84.9, which is fantastic.

Financing works too. Spillane is in the final season of the two-year deal he signed with Las Vegas before last season and had a cap hit of just $5.3 million this season. The Bills wouldn’t be on the hook for all of that, and it probably would have only cost Buffalo a Day 3 pick in the draft. This is undoubtedly worthy of consideration.

On the other hand, if the Bills are looking to send someone out of town before the trade deadline, it looks like sixth-year safety Mike Edwards could be an option.

Conformable ESPN’s Jeremy FowlerEdwards, who won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay Buccaneers four seasons ago and another with Kansas City Chiefs last year, he wants out of Buffalo.

“Veteran Buffalo safety Mike Edwards is available and would like to go somewhere where he can play (has been a constant inactive),” Fowler wrote.

Signed last offseason to help offset the losses of Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde, Edwards just hasn’t been a big part of Buffalo’s defense. He appeared in just three games and made just one tackle, which came in the Bills’ Week 5 loss to the team. Houston Texans.

Once projected as the starter, Edwards dealt with various injuries during spring practice and training camp and eventually lost out to Damar Hamlin and Taylor Rapp. It will be interesting to see if the Bills can find a buyer before Tuesday.

An off-field rumor circulating this week is that Bills owner Terry Pegula may be looking to sell part of the franchise.

On Bloomberg NewsPegula has been in talks with private equity firm Arctos Partners to “acquire a minority stake” in the Bills.

The report claimed that no deal had yet been struck and that “another suitor, or suitors, may emerge”.

Again, this has nothing to do with the product on the ground, but it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on.
