Police on ‘alert’ after looting, violence after Dodgers Word Series win

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said local police were on “alert” after looting and violence in the city following the Los Angeles Dodgers’ World Series win.

“As we celebrate this achievement tonight and in the days ahead, violence will not be tolerated. The LAPD is currently on tactical alert and has activated a strategic plan to protect communities and businesses, which includes proactive deployment and a coordinated strategy with regional partners to ensure all Angelenos are able to celebrate safely.” Bass said in a statement Wednesday.

The Dodgers won the World Series on Wednesday night, defeating the New York Yankees in Game 5. After the game, fans took to the streets of Los Angeles to celebrate and clashed with law enforcement.

Bass said local police were activated and the city’s Emergency Operations Center was activated at level 3, meaning personnel were in person and coordinating between departments. Four command posts across the city would “help promote post-game safety”.

Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) posted on social media that World Series revelers became a “hostile mob,” surrounding a public bus and attempting to set it on fire. Officers told the people to leave the area, and people threw projectiles at LAPD members.

The LAPD announced that several businesses in the area were robbed and several orders to disperse were given to people on the street. The the agency said “arrests were made.”

“We were asked to celebrate responsibly,” LAPD posted.

The Dodgers will have two official opportunities to celebrate: a ticketed event Friday at Dodgers Stadium and a parade through downtown Los Angeles Friday morning. City officials detailed their plans for the events and how they plan to keep people safe, including traffic alternatives.

“This will be a fitting celebration for our championship team and our dedicated fans. I look forward to seeing everyone there,” Bass said in a statement.
