Fire at Whitehall apartment complex injures 5, including one who jumped from a window

A fire that started Thursday night at a Whitehall apartment complex injured five people, the Whitehall Fire Department said.

Multi-agency firefighters responded to the Colonial East Apartments on the 4200 block of East Broad Street at 11:57 p.m. Thursday on a report of a fire with multiple victims trapped.

When Whitehall Battalion Chief Ray Cunningham arrived at the scene, he saw a person jump from a window and land on the ground, he said.

The fire was contained “relatively quickly” to where it originated, in a second-floor hallway of the building, Cunningham said. Five people were transported from the scene with injuries, including one person with serious injuries.

All five are expected to survive, according to Cunningham.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, and the investigation will be handled by the Columbus Fire Department, according to Cunningham.[email protected]
