2024 NFL Week 9 Action Report: Lions-Packers ‘harder to book’ due to Love injury

There are no slots when it comes to betting on the NFL.

Oddsmakers are formed by point spread. And if your NFL bets somehow get above .500 for an extended period of time, then consider yourself lucky.

That being said, if you blindly bet on Detroit Lions against the spread (ATS) every week through the 2022 midseason, then you’d have a 29-8 ATS record and a bit more money.

That trend continues in NFL odds Week 9, when the Lions travel to face off Green Bay Packers?

Early punters seem to think so.

“To no one’s surprise, they’re playing the team that everyone likes to bet on, which is the Lions,” said Joey Feazel, Caesars Sports head of football merchandising. “Lions are amazing and a lot of fun to watch.”

Oddsmakers and rough tipsters offer their insights on Lions vs. Packers and a handful of other games as we delve into Week 9 NFL betting nuggets.

NFL Rocks on FOX

Lions-Packers Known Facts: This matchup is easily the Game of the Week and is on FOX at 4:25 PM ET on Sunday. Also known as the weekend is coming, Detroit is a 3-point favorite at Caesars Sports, down from a -4.5 opening on Sunday.

But the unknown is the problem: Will Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love play? Love suffered a groin injury in the second half of the Packers’ 30-27 win at Jacksonville in Week 8.

Love did not practice Wednesday and remains questionable for Sunday’s NFC North matchup.

“This is a harder game to book because we don’t have a complete picture if Jordan Love is going to play,” Feazel said. “If he’s out, this line goes to Lions -4.5. If he plays, I think maybe we’ll see that go to Lions -1.5/-1.”

But again, early punters like the favorite.

“I don’t think Love will play,” Feazel said.

Detroit is 6-1 straight up (SU) and against the spread (ATS) this season, while Green Bay is 6-2 SU/4-4 ATS.

NFL Sharp Side

Pro bettor Randy McKay went 1-1 in spread betting last week, cashing the Los Angeles Rams +3 against the Minnesota Vikings and narrowly missing the New York Giants +7 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

McKay has three NFL games this week starting with Denver Broncos vs. Baltimore Ravens. He likes Denver underdogs at +9.5 or +10.

“Baltimore is coming off a loss to Cleveland and faces a Denver team with a strong defense that should match the Ravens’ running game,” McKay said. “Baltimore’s defense is still getting hammered, so I see this game being closer and lower scoring.”

McKay is also an underdog Indianapolis Colts +5.5/+6 vs Minnesota Vikings. He likes the Colts move to Joe Flacco at defender, on the bench Anthony Richardson. In addition, the Vices lost a standout left tackle Christian Darrisaw to a season-ending knee injury.

Minnesota acquired left tackle on Tuesday Cam Robinson in a trade with Jacksonville.

Despite losing with Giants Last week, McKay goes Big Blue again this week. Likes New York +3.5/+4 vs Commanders from Washington.

“The Giants are coming off a tough loss where they looked like the right side against the spread,” McKay said of New York’s 26-18 setback at Pittsburgh. “This is a rematch of Week 2, where the Giants should have won the game but the kicker got hurt. I see another one almost here.”

Kicker from New York Graham Gano was injured early in the Week 2 game. The Giants lost 21-18 as 1.5-point underdogs.

Attention command

The betting public often tends to remember what they saw last time. In Week 8, it was largely a miraculous prayer from the Commanders, answered in an 18-15 victory over the Chicago Bears.

Meanwhile, the visiting Giants lost to the Steelers 26-18 on Monday night.

“People will remember to Jayden Daniels Rejoice Mary and Daniel Jones doesn’t play well on Monday night,” Feazel said while talking about Sunday’s 1 p.m. ET kickoff on FOX between the Commanders and Giants.

“The Chiefs are really becoming a public team. Daniels is making noise in Washington.”

NFL snaps

Feazel hit two other notable plays in NFL Week 9 odds:

  • Miami Dolphins vs. Buffalo Bills: Caesars opened Buffalo as a 6-point home favorite, spent a few days at -6.5, then moved to -6 Tuesday afternoon. “We’re taking a lot of Bills money here. It’s a one-way street so far.” Kickoff is Sunday at 1:00 PM ET.
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Kansas City Chiefs: Heading into Monday night’s game, Kansas City is pegged at -9 at Caesars. “So far, not much action. That’s a pretty big number at 9, so some of the better looking customers play the Bucs. The Chiefs don’t really win because of it Patrick Mahomes. They win because of their defense. Kansas City looked vulnerable at times. But I expect to see more action from the Chiefs because the Bucs are so beat up.”

I like big bets and I can’t lie

No six-figure games have been reported yet in NFL Week 9 odds. But trust me, they’re coming. I always do. Three notable bets at Caesars Sports:

  • $22,000 panthers +7.5 vs. Sanctify: Carolina is a league worst 1-7 SU and ATS. The Panthers have lost five straight games on the scoreboard and in points. Customer Caesars just hopes Carolina can stay seven at home against New Orleans. If this happens, then the client wins $20,000 (total payout $42,000).
  • $11,000 Raiders +7.5 vs. Bengalis: If the underdog Las Vegas covers, then the bettor wins $10,000 (total payout $21,000)
  • $11,000 Packers +4.5 vs. Lions: This bet will look a lot better if Love plays and the line drops to +1 or so on the kickoff. If the ticket lands, then the bettor wins $10,000 (total payout $21,000).

And just a reminder: we also like small bets that win big.

If Los Angeles Dodgers by winning the World Series, a FanDuel Sportsbook customer would be one step closer to turning five dollars into $823,705.

Provided the Dodgers finish New York Yankeesall that remains is a Detroit Lions Super Bowl to complete this eight-game stretch of championship winners.
