Halloween Safety Reminders Before Trick or Treating Thursday

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – We know you’ll probably be taking your kids trick-or-treating on Thursday, and it’s important to have fun, but it’s also good to be safe in the process.

Here are some safety tips to keep in mind from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. Try trick or treating during the day if you can. If you must be in the dark, choose suits that are light in color and visible to other drivers. It uses reflective tape to provide better visibility in the dark and if it rains. You can use the tape to decorate your suits, bags and anything else to make yourself more visible.

If you and the kids are going out on Thursday, it will be hard for the kids to avoid getting candy, but for their safety make sure they don’t eat the candy right away. We know that candy can be so good, but we have to be careful to eliminate certain risks that can be associated with not checking your tastes. Wisconsin DHS says it’s important to be aware. The first thing to do is to make sure that the candy is not a choking hazard before you or your children eat it. Second, make sure the candy wrapper has not been tampered with. If the bag is open or looks weird in any way, don’t risk it. You can throw away that candy if it looks suspicious. Finally, always be aware of what candy is going into your toddler’s mouth.

Experts say it’s important to try to limit sweets. Keep your candy rules realistic, consistent, and positive. It’s a great opportunity to teach them about moderation, balance and healthy indulgence.
