Partial Georgia election recount confirms victory for ruling party amid allegations of fraud

A partial vote count in Georgia’s contested parliamentary election has confirmed the ruling party’s win, election officials said Thursday, after opposition parties alleged irregularities and Washington and Brussels called for an investigation.

Georgia plunged into political uncertainty following Saturday’s election as the pro-Western opposition said the vote was “stolen” by the ruling Georgian Dream party and refused to recognize its results.

Pro-European President Salome Zurabishvili – at odds with the ruling party – declared the election results “illegitimate”, citing electoral interference by a “Russian special operation”.

The Central Electoral Commission said the recount in about 12 percent of polling stations, involving 14 percent of the vote, “did not lead to a significant change in the official results previously announced.”

“The final numbers changed only slightly at around nine per cent of polling stations recounted,” a spokesman said.

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets on Monday to protest the alleged fraud.
