Briton, 71, dies in Spain disaster as death toll rises to 95

A 71-year-old British man died in flash floods in Spainwith the death toll expected to rise.

The unnamed victim died in hospital of hypothermia and cardiac arrest hours after he was rescued from his home near Alhaurin de la Torre, Málaga, the president of the Andalusian government said on Wednesday.

At least 95 people, including children, have been killed and dozens more are still missing in floods in southern and eastern Spain.

The deadliest floods to hit Spain in decades swept away cars, turned roads into rivers, submerged cities and disrupted railway lines.

The storms that started on Tuesday caused “devastating” flooding from Malaga to Valencia, with The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchezwarning on Wednesday that the “devastating” storm was not yet over.

“For those looking for their loved ones, all of Spain feels your pain,” he said in a televised address.

Emergency services in the eastern region of Valencia confirmed a death toll of 92 on Wednesday. Two other victims were reported in the neighboring region of Castilla La Mancha, while southern Andalusia reported one death.

The mayor of Utiel, a town in Valencia, told national broadcaster RTVE that Tuesday was “the worst day of my life” after six residents died in floods.

“We were caught like rats. Cars and garbage containers flowed through the streets. The water rose to three meters,” he said.

Rescue personnel and more than 1,100 soldiers from Spain’s emergency response units were deployed to the affected areas, while the central government set up a crisis committee to coordinate rescue efforts.

Spain’s national weather service said more rain fell in eight hours in Valencia than in the last 20 months, calling the deluge “extraordinary”.

The nation is still recovering from a severe drought and has seen record high temperatures in recent years. Scientists say increased episodes of extreme weather are likely linked to climate change.

Prolonged drought makes it harder for the soil to absorb large volumes of water.

Winds of 120 km/h – stronger than hurricane force – hit the south coast, where waves of 5 meters were recorded.

Spain’s parliament was suspended due to the flooding and the king, Felipe VI, used a post on X to express his devastation and send his “heartfelt condolences” to the families of the victims.

A high-speed train carrying 300 passengers derailed near Malaga, while trains to Madrid and Barcelona were cancelled. Schools and other essential services were suspended in the worst affected areas.

Britain’s Foreign Office said and: “Our staff are ready to support British citizens overseas 24/7”, warning travelers to “check the latest weather warnings from Spanish Meteorological Office” and to “follow the instructions of the local authorities”.
