A 33-year-old mother climbed over a safety railing and plunged into Niagara Falls with her two children, a nine-year-old and a five-month-old, according to New York State Police.

Authorities responded to the incident at the park around 9 p.m. Monday and determined the family had crossed the tracks onto Luna Island, a small island between American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls that, along with Horseshoe Falls, form the popular tourist attraction. .

“The investigation has determined that this incident was intentional in nature, although the circumstances remain under investigation,” state police said in a news release.

Authorities are using drones and underwater vehicles in the investigation.

Search and rescue efforts have so far been unsuccessful.
