Walz did not offer the House speaker to Ocasio-Cortez during the live broadcast

A The October 2024 live broadcast with Tim Walz and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sparked claims that the vice presidential candidate promised the US congresswoman the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives if Democrats win the next election. This is false; footage shared online was deceptively edited to omit the fact that they were discussing the committee chairman positions — all are elected by parliamentarians.

“CONFIRMED: AOC’s Pelosification of Nancy is complete, Tim Walz promises her House Speaker position,” says an Oct. 27 X. post dividing the three-second clip

The The Post then quotes the Minnesota governor as saying, “We’re going to win this election. We will make you put a hammer in your hand in Parliament”.

Far-right activist Laura Loomer shared a similar claim the same day.

“Tim Walz just told the AOC that he has a good chance of being SPEAKER under the Harris-Walz administration,” she says in an X post.

Both posts include a short clip from October 27 Twitch live streamduring which Walz and Democratic US Representative Ocasio-Cortez, known by the initials AOC, played ‘Madden NFL 25’ and discussed politics (archived Here).

The claim circulated elsewhere X, Instagram and other platforms. Fox News also amplified the claim into an X post and one article.

With less than a week until Election Day on November 5, the White House contest remained One dead heat, with Vice chairman Harris and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump offer two starkly contrasting visions for the United States. Both campaigns they took steps players to try to attract the support of young people.

Walz was repeatedly targeted by false statements since he joined the Democratic ticket in August, more of which AFP has disappointed.

The latest posts are just as fake — the video is deceptively shortened to remove Walz’s words. context.

Walz’s The remarks followed Ocasio-Cortez noting that she serves at Bipartisan Task Force on Artificial Intelligence (archived Here). she is also ranking member of the Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources and could become chairman if the Democrats win the House, which the Republicans control with a majority of eight chairs.

Walz told Ocasio-Cortez that Democrats are “going to put a hammer in your hand in the House — maybe on that committee, so we can do something.” The clip circulating online omits the second part of the statement.

He continued: “I think, for your listeners to understand, when you’re in the House of Representatives, whoever has the gavel, that’s about it, makes the decision. if you want people who actually have a to-do list and want to get it done, stay engaged.”

It is not only the president of the Chamber who holds the gavel; the chairs of each committee and subcommittee keep them too in their respective hearings. There were 20 permanent committees of the Chamber and 104 subcommittees as from October 30.

The White House does not choose the House loudspeakereither — the room choose them.

Ocasio-Cortez addressed the claims about Walz in an Oct. 28 statement, 2024 X post (archived Here).

“He said we would get the hammers. There are over 100 hammers in the House. I am currently the ranking member of Energy & Mineral Resources. If the Dems win the majority and I stay on the subcommittee, we would all get hammers.”

Fox News later updated his article to include Walz’s full comments.
