Candidate signs stolen, political flags attacked

Election Day is a week away, and the final push appears to be leaving tensions high among voters in Palm Beach County.

Some of you have contacted WPTV after your politically affiliated property was victimized.

“When I got to my car, I saw there were all these Republican (signs) scattered around, say no to Amendment 4 signs and candidate signs,” said Rolando Barrero. “And then I turned around and then I noticed I was missing the Harris-Walz sign.”

Through a doorbell video, Barrero captured a woman trespassing on his property and taking the political sign from the front steps of his home.

She also left other signs for the Republican candidates scattered in his yard.

He was concerned he was being targeted because of his political affiliation and role as chairman of the Florida Democratic Hispanic Caucus and called West Palm Beach police.

“I’d rather document people who break the law so we can identify them later if there’s harm,” Barrero said.

WBPPD told WPTV that they charged the woman with one count of petit larceny and that she stole other non-political signs in the neighborhood.

WPBPD said it does not specifically track political appeals, but said the theft of political signs could be a misdemeanor or more, depending on the quantity or value.

They said road rage, physical altercations or trespassing would be charged as such.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said they received 49 calls related to political incidents since February. The busiest month was October with 13 calls.

Barrero said he plans to install more security cameras around his property for safety. He said WBPPD took the signs involved as evidence and put up a new Harris-Walz sign.

People who support former President Trump said they also felt the heat.

“When it comes to political bullying, have you experienced any?” asked WPTV reporter Joel Lopez.

“For the most part, we’ve seen a lot of thumbs up and support, but we’re seeing a lot of middle fingers and a lot of people yelling and screaming at us,” Jestin Nevarez said.

He drives in a car that is decorated with Trump flags, stickers and other signs.

He said just last week, an angry woman in Boynton Beach tried to rip the flag off his car during a stoplight.

“We can support whoever we want, but these people resorting to violence, resorting to ripping out our flags in the middle of traffic, that’s a problem,” Nevarez said.

According to a Reuters report, political violence in the United States is the worst since the 1970s, with 300 cases identified since 2021.
