Trump says ‘nobody’s fault’ for comedian’s jokes about Puerto Rico

The former president Donald Trump said it’s “nobody’s fault” about a comedian sharing controversial comments Puerto Rico at his rally in Madison Square Garden, but added that he didn’t want anyone making “bad jokes.”

In the first part of an interview released Tuesday by Fox News Hannitythe former president addressed remarks made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe over the weekend that Puerto Rico is a “floating island of trash,” which drew attention from both sides of the aisle.

“I still have — I have no idea who he is,” Trump said to host Sean Hannity. “Someone said it was a comedian who made a joke about Puerto Rico or something, and I had no idea who it was. I’ve never seen him, never heard of him… I had no idea they put a comedian on, which everybody does. You throw comedians in, you don’t check them, and they go crazy.”

“It’s nobody’s fault. But someone said something bad,” added the former president.

Hannity suggested that Trump may not even have been at the rally when Hinchcliffe spoke. The former president said ABC News Tuesday that he I didn’t hear the comedian’s comments and he didn’t know who invited him.

The comments sparked backlash among Hispanic communities and lawmakers in both parties, with Republicans working to he distances himself from Hinchcliffe’s remarks. Trump echoed comments made by GOP allies and Hannity that Hinchcliffe “has nothing to do with the party” and said he “can’t imagine it’s a big deal.”

“I don’t know if it’s a big deal or not, but I don’t want anyone making bad jokes or stupid jokes,” the former president said.

However, comments made by President Joe Biden about Trump’s rally in Madison Square Garden sparked a firestorm and angered Trump supporters.

Biden criticized Hinchcliffe’s Puerto Rico joke, arguing that “the only trash I see floating around there is his supporters.” White House spokesman Andrew Bates immediately began cleaning up, saying in a statement that the president referred to the “hateful rhetoric at the Madison Square Garden rally as trash.”

Bates’ statement included a transcript that added an apostrophe to Biden’s comment to adjust the meaning to be singular in reference to the comedian.

“The only trash I see floating out there is his supporter’s — his — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable and un-American,” the White House transcript read.

Biden also tried to clean up his statement in a post on X, however the president’s comments may hurt Vice President Kamala Harris’ latest efforts to appeal to Republican and independent voters who are unsure who to vote for in the elections of 2024. .
