City of Birmingham to boost cyber security

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The City of Birmingham is improving its cyber security after a cyber attack earlier this year disrupted multiple systems.

City councilors passed a resolution Tuesday morning to accept state and local grant money to determine the city’s cybersecurity preparedness, identify areas for improvement and obtain resources to strengthen city systems.

The funding request is nearly $2 million, with a 20 percent match from the city required.

City Councilor Valerie Abbott says you can never have too much protection against these cybercriminals.

“Look at your computer at home,” she said. “You know, you’re always worried that someone’s going to walk into it. You won’t know I’m there. Well, someone got into ours and we know they were there, but how can you stop people from coming after you in the future? So that’s the goal and we’ll be working on it forever.”

Abbott goes on to say that these cybercriminals are always looking for a way to get into systems and steal information, and the only way to keep them at bay is to keep improving security.
