Westchester County murder: Suspect charged after 1 dead, 2 injured at Somers building

SOMERS, Westchester County (WABC) — The suspect accused in a deadly attack at a Westchester apartment complex has been arrested and charged with murder after a manhunt forced schools to close and a shelter in place.

Fernando Jimenez, 40, is accused of shooting his girlfriend and her two sons in an apartment behind the Crossroads Plaza on Route 6 in Somers around 11:30 p.m. Monday.

The victims were found inside the home. Sources tell Eyewitness News the two juveniles were boys — a 10th grader and an 8th grader.

Two of the victims were rushed to Westchester Medical Center, and a third to Hudson Valley Presbyterian Hospital in New York.

The 10th grader was declared dead at the hospital, and the 8th grader is in critical condition. The mother is said to be stable.

Jiminez was taken into custody just before 11 a.m. Tuesday. He is not the father of the boys.

He was arraigned Tuesday night and charged with second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.

New York State Police issued shelter-in-place orders for residents of Westchester County and closed schools in the Putnam Valley district for the day as they searched for the gunman.

The Somers Central School District said in a message on its website that it canceled all after-school activities on Tuesday “in light of the tragic incident that has affected our community. While our schools are safe, given the gravity of the situation and out of respect. for the family, we opted to cancel all afterschool activities.”

The motive behind the shooting also remains in question as New York State Police lead the investigation.
