JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – There is a Donald Trump campaign ad running in many states across the country that makes this claim: “Now Kamala wants struggling seniors to pay more in Social Security taxes while she gives Medicare and Social Security to illegals” .

News4JAX reviewed the request and it appears to be based on Harris’ campaign to remove the payroll tax cap for working Americans who earn $168,600.

That means people who earn more than that will no longer have taxes capped at that amount.

It would affect working Americans considerably more than anyone else on Social Security. For it to affect a Social Security recipient, they would have to earn more than that amount and still be working.

“It creates an argument for some that you’re raising Social Security taxes and you’re not going to get an increased benefit for it,” News4JAX political analyst Rick Mullaney said of Social Security recipients who could theoretically be affected.

But once again this would hurt young working Americans.

The Harris campaign responded to News4JAX on this ad, saying the ad is objectively false. Here’s what they said:

• The Harris campaign responds in detail … they said: “When asked about cuts to entitlements like Medicare and Social Security, Trump said: “Oh, we’ll cut“

• They also point to Project 2025, which they said would raise the retirement age to 80, but Trump has repeatedly denied having anything to do with Project 2025.

• They also said: “Each of Trump’s budget proposals as president cuts included on Social Security and Medicare — while working to cut taxes for the wealthy and corporations”

As for the other part of the claim in the ad that said “while she provides Medicare and Social Security to illegals,” Mullaney said that’s a separate issue from Social Security.

“(Trump) is telling a big picture, in his view, that if you support a path to citizenship, which Kamala Harris is, and if she’s successful, it would result in her receiving Social Security benefits and straining the system,” Mullaney said.
