A Davenport man was arrested on charges of burglary of storage unit; also arrested for theft in January

A Davenport man who is on trial for an alleged burglary in January has been charged in another burglary, according to court records.

David Adams, 27, was arrested Oct. 28 on two counts of third-degree burglary, criminal mischief, two counts of fourth-degree theft and one count each of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The criminal complaint states that on Oct. 28, around 9:53 a.m., Davenport police were called to the storage garages on Blythwood Place in reference to a burglary. Adams’ mother rents a storage unit at the location that shares walls with two other storage units. The complaint says that on Oct. 14, Adams unscrewed a wooden panel from the wall separating his mother’s unit from one of the others and entered that unit without the owner’s permission. He allegedly took a toolbox with several tools and hid them in his mother’s apartment. The value of the tools and toolbox is estimated at $650.

On Oct. 27, the complaint says Adams unscrewed another wall panel between his mother’s unit and a different one and entered that unit without the owner’s permission. He took two totes of Christmas decorations, a wooden cabinet, a roller crate, fishing rods, a metal detector and torch canisters. He then stored the items in his mother’s unit. The value of these items is approximately $520.

In a post-Miranda interview, Adams said he took the items to fund a meth addiction. Officers found .4 grams of meth in his wallet and Adams admitted it was his and that he was addicted. A field test showed the substance in his wallet was methamphetamine. A glass pipe with meth residue was found in his pocket and Adams admitted it was his, according to court records.

Court documents show that on January 19, 2024, Adams and another defendant were spotted by a Scott County sheriff’s deputy. They entered a residential garage in the 24000 block of 205th Street in LeClaire without permission and were seen by the deputy exiting the garage with a handful of tools in their possession. The deputy identified himself and told them to stop, but they got into a vehicle and drove off. The deputy followed, activating both his lights and siren. The defendants refused to stop and stop sticks were used to disable the car next to the Arconic. The men were arrested and admitted in a post-Miranda interview that they were in the garage.

On Oct. 29, a pretrial violation report was filed in Scott County Court, saying Adams was released on pretrial release for the January incident and argued he violated the terms of his pretrial release and a warrant should be issued for his arrest.

Adams is currently in the Scott County Jail on $5,000 bond. He has a trial on the October charges on November 21. He is scheduled for sentencing on the January charge on Nov. 6.
