DES MOINES, Iowa — We started the day with very warm conditions for this time of year, with temperatures in the 70s (helped by strong southerly winds) on a day where the average high is 57.

Wednesday’s highs will likely be set just after midnight, with temperatures mostly falling slowly through the rest of the day.

Wind gusts to around 45 mph are expected for Tuesday. These gusts may exceed 50 mph at points during the evening. Winds appear to die down by Thursday afternoon.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed parts of southern Iowa at a slight risk of severe weather, with wind gusts and hail the main threats tomorrow afternoon and late evening.

Below is the progression of rain and storms across central Iowa Wednesday. Rain looks set to begin by midday, with stronger storms and heavier showers coming in during the afternoon and late evening.
