Man sentenced to nearly 9 years in 2023 drive-by shooting, officials say

ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) – The Buncombe County Prosecutor’s Office says a man has been sentenced after pleading guilty to multiple charges.

On September 30, 2023, officials said deputies were called to a single shot fired at a vehicle traveling southbound with two occupants on I-26 near mile marker 39.

Before the shooting, the driver saw Zachary Desmond Stewart, 29, driving aggressively and pulled out his cell phone to film. The video also captures Stewart shooting at the victim’s car from inside his vehicle.

Stewart was later arrested after he crashed in Henderson County. Deputies found a .380 handgun inside his vehicle.

According to officials, no one was physically injured as a result of his actions.

During the trial, Stewart pleaded guilty to two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharging a firearm into an occupied moving vehicle and felony possession of a firearm by a felon.

He was sentenced to approximately 9 years in prison.
