1 dead, 2 teenagers injured in Akron Halloween party shooting

Akron police are investigating a shooting that left an 18-year-old man dead and two other teenagers injured Saturday night during what police believe was a Halloween party.

About 10:46 p.m., police responded to a home in the 100 block of Paris Avenue and located Lashae Ellis, who was critically injured with a gunshot wound, police said.

The police also found a 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl who had also been shot. Both had non-life threatening injuries. Police said the two fled the home after being shot.

All three teenagers were taken to a nearby hospital, where Ellis was later pronounced dead, police said. The other two are expected to recover from their injuries.

Police said during a Halloween party, an unknown man pulled out a gun and fired shots inside the home, striking the victims.

“We’re told that, you know, a group of people entered the party very shortly after at least one of those people pulled out a gun and started shooting. It’s unclear if that victim (Ellis) was the intended target. There is a belief that he was not,” said Akron Police Capt. Michael Miller.

Miller said they believe the home may have been used as a short-term rental property. The shooting remains under investigation as police continue to search for revelers who may have answers.

“We would ask, as we often do, those who were at the party in particular to examine their hearts and decide if there is anything they are willing to share with us that could lead to this investigation,” said Miller.

Officers detained an 18-year-old man after a brief foot chase and recovered a gun he dropped as he fled, police said. However, it is not known what role, if any, he played in the shootings. He was booked into the Summit County Jail and charged with carrying a concealed weapon and obstructing official business.
