Green Bay School Board Approves New Budget; Look towards the referendum vote

GREEN BAY (WLUK) – The Green Bay Area Public School District has approved its budget for next year.

After presentation of a balanced budget for the 2024-2025 school yearnew numbers were brought to the district council on Monday evening.

“We presented the budget on October 14th, and then of course October 15th is an important date for school districts where we get the final voucher numbers,” said Chief Financial Officer Angie Roble.

She tells FOX 11 the changes have been minimal. “Overall, it changed our income and expenses by about $6,000. We got about $380,000 less than we anticipated in matching aid, which is just an offset for property taxes.”

With the budget approved, it’s time for the district to move on to the next step, the November ballot referendum, asking $183 million.

In preparation, the board approved two separate tax levies, one for the referendum if it passes and one for if it fails.

“They have to vote on two separate taxes because we don’t know what the referendum results will be until Nov. 5,” Roble said. They vote on November 1st.

The referendum vote will decide the new mill rate or tax. If the vote passes, the mill rate will be $7.65, and if it fails, it will be $5.32.

Roble says even if the referendum fails, the district will still have a balanced budget. “If we didn’t pass the referendum, I think there are some things really, some things to note that are important is that the mill rate will go down this year,” she explained. “But we should continue to give back to the community to sustain and ultimately increase the mill rate. We still have needs, we still need capital. Roofs still need to be fixed, boilers still need to be replaced.”

Roble added that he hopes to see an increase in per-student funding for the next biennial budget.
