Trump advisers suggest ditching FBI background checks for security clearances: reports

A new memo being promoted by a group of former presidents Donald Trumphis advisers suggest that he break with the old practice of having FBI veterinary members of its administration to receive security clearances, multiple plugs reported on Sunday.

The document, promoted by Trump legal adviser Boris Epshteyn, suggests that private-sector investigators should instead conduct background checks, which are designed to identify any personal problems or national security concerns about individuals before they gain access to classified information.

If the proposal gets the green light, it would allow those close to the former president who might otherwise have difficulty obtaining security clearances to access classified material.

The New York Times, the the first outlet to report the newssays it’s unclear whether Trump has seen the proposal and would actually agree to implement it if he wins re-election in November.

It is not known how many of Trump’s appointees would be targeted by the proposed change.

Trump has not publicly commented on the proposal since the reports emerged.

Steven Cheung, a spokesman for the former president, did not directly address the content of the proposal when The Times sought comment. Instead, he claimed baseless Democrats have “weaponized” the Justice Department against the former president and said Trump would use “all the powers of the presidency” to build his team.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) has suggested that circumventing FBI background checks would not be in the nation’s interest and would be viewed largely favorably by U.S. adversaries, including Russia.

“Sounds like a good idea. If you are a criminal. Or at the Kremlin. Who needs a background check?” Schiff wrote on social media. “What could go wrong?”

During his first term, some of Trump’s allies, including his son-in-law Jared Kushnerapparently he had trouble passing the FBI background check. In his case, Trump would be Speakers so Kushner got clearance anyway.
