Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos wants more conservative opinion writers at paper: Report

Billionaire Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos would like to add more conservative writers to the paper the opinion section in an effort to expand the newspaper’s audience “Democracy Dies in Darkness”.

Last week, the Post sent liberals into a frenzy when it announced this would not endorse a candidate in the upcoming presidential election, despite years of hostility to former President Trump and reported endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris, already drafted and ready for publication. The paper’s editor insisted the Post was returning to its roots, but outrage quickly poured in as many liberal readers canceled their subscriptions and urged others to do the same.

Nineteen opinion columnists co-signed a letter condemning the decision, at least three employees resigned in protest and many other current and former Post employees expressed their outrage on social media.

It has been reported by the Washington Post Guild and other outlets that Bezos has appealed not to offer an endorsement, but the powerful Amazon mogul has remained mum on the matter.

The New York Times has covered the tumult that took place at his rival paper and reported that Bezos “is interested in expanding The Post’s audience among conservatives,” citing a person familiar with the matter.

Bezos informed editor William Lewis “that he wanted more conservative writers in the opinion section,” the Times added.

The Washington Post declined to comment. A representative for Bezos did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

AHEAD OF THE NO-CARE DECISION, THE WASHINGTON POST CALLED TRUMP ‘THE INSIDER’ AND ‘THE WORST PRESIDENT OF MODERN TIMES’

The Post has some conservative columnists and contributors, such as Hugh Hewitt, Marc Thiessen and George Will, but publishes others that are much more left-leaning. It’s unclear whether the Post will bolster its roster with additional conservatives, but much of the paper’s current staff clearly doesn’t care for Trump.

The station has used various terms to suggest the former president is unfit for office in recent years and recently criticized Trump’s “insidious” rhetoric in recent interviews and rallies. Editorials said he would govern “chaotically,” that Harris was clearly “better” when comparing the two candidates, and that he had a “tank of complaints” at his acceptance speech for the Republican nomination.

He has an “extreme agenda” and is “unpredictable” and “downright dangerous,” the Post claimed earlier this year when it feared then-Democratic candidate Joe Biden might lose the race.

In 2016 and 2020, the Post enthusiastically endorsed Hillary Clinton and Biden against Trump. Called him “awful” and “uniquely unqualified” in 2016. In 2020, he was referring to Trump as “the worst president of modern times.”
