Ticker: Biden looks at competition in air travel; Former game show employees are suing Sony

The Biden administration has said it is launching a broad public inquiry into the state of competition in air travel, including the effect of airline mergers and joint ventures.

The investigation is being handled by the Justice Department’s antitrust division and the Department of Transportation.

But the timing of the announcement late last week — less than three months before Biden leaves office and the race to succeed him is seen as a shambles — casts uncertainty over the overhaul’s fate.

“Unfortunately, the timing of this ‘broad investigation,’ which was announced 12 days before a national election, suggests political motivations,” the trade group Airlines for America said in a statement.

Former ‘Jeopardy’ employees are suing the show

Former “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” employees have filed employment discrimination, harassment and retaliation claims against Sony Pictures Entertainment after the Culver City, Calif.-based company fired workers who spoke out against toxic working conditions.

Shelley Ballance Ellis, a former executive producer on the game series, and Monique Diaz, a former member of the series’ authorization and licensing department, each filed a complaint with the California Department of Civil Rights late last week.

Sony Pictures has denied that any of its decisions were retaliatory, attributing the layoffs to a broader reorganization.

“Sony Pictures Entertainment takes all allegations of discrimination very seriously,” the studio said in a statement. “Earlier this year there was a major reorganization of our game show group, which resulted in the elimination of a number of roles to address redundancies and the evolving business needs of a 40-plus year operation. These removals were business efficiency decisions and not retaliation.”
