Seth Meyers says he was ’embarrassingly petty’ during his ‘SNL’ days: ‘Things were really hot’

Seth Meyers says he was “embarrassingly petty” in some of his interactions with his Saturday Night Live co-stars throughout their time on the show from 2001-2014.

The comedian and late night host reflected on his time on the show, which included a stint Weekend updateclaiming that he used to have a short temper.

“I feel like I was a lot more temperamental when I was younger and things were really going strong on SNL,” Meyers said on NPRs Wild Card podcasts. “And there were definitely times when my instinct was to say something that would have ended people’s relationship.”

He added: “You know, just arguing and, looking back, still embarrassingly petty, you know?”

Meyers says his friend and producer Mike Shoemakerwho worked with him on both SNL and Late at nightgave him some valuable information that prevented him from burning any bridges.

“I remember saying once, ‘I’m going to say this and so it’s a you-know-what,'” he recalled. “And he always used to say, ‘It’s a long life. It’s a long life. And the people you work with here, what you go through with them, even for people who aren’t your favorite people, that’s a connection. And you will need these relationships for the rest of your life to remember what this time was like. And these people, more of them will be at your wedding than not.

“And so I’m very happy to have lived up to the saying ‘It’s a long life.’ Because if it’s someone you think could be your friend in the future, there’s no reason to burn them in the present,” said Meyers, who was lead writer on SNL from 2006 until his departure.

Meyers also admitted to being somewhat “greedy” of him SNL Co-stars, who went on to star in bigger films and other roles, noting that it “wasted a lot of time and put me under pressure.”

“And then you make this mistake, you walk down a hallway and you see pictures of former cast members and you think that because you work at the same place they work, you’re going to have the same career, you know?” Meyers added. “But it’s a mistake to say just because you got hired at the same place as Adam Sandler and Will Ferrell, that doesn’t mean you’re going to have their career. And a lot of different people with a lot of different skill sets come through SNL. And so, you know, I’m very grateful that I had a patience with my time there that allowed me to find my fit.”
