Courage, Hope and Strength: 10,000 Supporters Take Part in Staten Island Breast Cancer Walk (200 Photos)

STATEN ISLAND, NY — Thousands braved the chilly morning temperatures Sunday as survivors and supporters donned pink while participating in the Making Strides of Staten Island Breast Cancer Walk.

The event started at 8am at Midland Beach where there was entertainment, food and various vendors and organizations with booths.

The walk, which used the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Boardwalk, had two ribbon cuttings, at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

A survivor and prosper tent was set up for those who heard the words “You have cancer” whether they are in remission, recently diagnosed or undergoing treatment. The tent provided information about American Cancer Society and the programs they offer.

Jodi Maidaa breast cancer survivor, said: “If you can leave this world a little better than you found it and make one life breathe easier for having lived, then you’ve made it. During the darkest time of my life, I learned an invaluable lesson: you can’t get through this without friends, family, and the Staten Island community. I am forever grateful for their support.”

Bernstein Intermediate School (IS 7) student Gianna Communiello said, “I went to the Making Strides Walk today because I wanted to show support and help make a difference. It’s about letting people with breast cancer know they’re not alone and we’re all in this together.”

Mike Bloomfield, owner of TekieGeek attended the walk to support friends Jeff and Denise Henrickowners of Stop and Store. “Their commitment to the community is inspiring and it felt natural to join them for such an important cause. Breast cancer touches so many lives and being a part of this event meant showing up for those who care and making sure no one faces it alone.”

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month began in October 1985, when the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries formed a partnership.

With the help of former First Lady and breast cancer survivor Betty Ford, the week-long breast cancer awareness initiative began. Betty Ford was diagnosed with breast cancer while her husband, Gerald Ford, was President of the United States. Because of this, Betty was able to bring more attention to the disease.
