‘Inconsiderate parking puts people at risk’ – police warning after ambulance blocked in Shrewsbury

Officers posted a photo online after becoming concerned about the problem in Castlefields.

PC Carl Williamson said he and a colleague were on foot patrol in the area when they saw the ambulance struggling to get through.

He said: “We are aware of ongoing parking issues in the Beacalls Lane and Albert Street area of Shrewsbury, close to Shrewsbury town centre.

“We understand that parking is limited in this area, however while on patrol today we witnessed an ambulance struggling to get from Albert Street to Beacalls Lane during an emergency call.

“I would like to remind those who park in this area that inconsiderate or illegal parking can put pedestrians and other road users at risk. It can also create an obstacle for emergency vehicles, as in this case.

“While some enforcement work is carried out jointly with partners, Shropshire Council employs parking enforcement officers to help with these issues. Often the problems can be solved by raising awareness of the impact or consequences or other practical measures.”

PC Williamson said they “spoke to drivers and advised them about the law”, “engaged with the council’s parking enforcement officers on local concerns”, “were working with partners to find alternative parking opportunities in land, particularly near schools’ and ‘spot checking areas with reported parking problems to ensure all members of the public are complying with parking laws’.
