Man accused of assaulting woman in front of child: Westlake Police Blotter

WESTLAKE, Ohio –

Assault: Clemens Road

The Westlake Police Department at noon on Oct. 11 heard from a caller who said their friend had been assaulted the previous night at the Extended Stay Hotel in Clemens.

Officers found the victim at the hotel, and she reported that her boyfriend, who was staying at the Extended Stay Hotel in Avon, had stopped by the night before. They had a disagreement over child care, which resulted in the 29-year-old man pushing the woman against a wall by her neck in front of the man’s 10-year-old child. The woman said she lost consciousness. Police officers documented the physical injuries by taking photographs.

Officers arrested the man at the Avon Hotel and charged him with strangulation and assault.

Improper handling of firearms

The police department, at 3:15 p.m., on October 12, received a report of a Ford F450 driving recklessly on I-90 eastbound in Lorain County.

A witness reported that the driver was drinking a 22 ounce beer. Westlake officers stopped the truck on Clague Road and learned the 30-year-old Cleveland Heights man did not have a valid license and was wanted on a warrant from the Cleveland Heights Police Department for previous traffic tickets . A 30-year-old male passenger from Cleveland appeared intoxicated and had an open 22-ounce can of Icehouse beer.

Officers found a loaded 9mm handgun in the glove compartment. The driver had several previous convictions that prohibited him from possessing weapons. The driver was cited for driving while suspended and both men were charged with improper handling of a firearm.

Parole violation: Detroit Road

A caller at 5:15 p.m. Oct. 12 reported a shirtless man was sitting on the grass at the entrance to Westbay Plaza on Detroit Road and was rubbing a white substance on his chest.

The 33-year-old Cleveland man told officers he was rubbing lotion on his body. The man was visibly intoxicated and wanted by the Ohio Adult Parole Authority for a parole violation.

Westlake officers arrested him and took him to the Cuyahoga County Jail.

Felony Assault: Clemens Road

A caller at 11:15 pm on October 12 reported that a man had been assaulted at the Sonesta Suites Hotel in Clemens.

The victim had swelling and bruising and was bleeding from the head. Officers determined he was in a group of co-workers staying in town on business and had gotten into a disagreement with his roommates about the noise level. The disagreement led to one man hitting the other over the head with a beer bottle. Alcohol appears to be a factor in the melee, according to police.

Officers arrested a 24-year-old man with an address in Carlsbad, California, for felonious assault.

Westlake Police officers, at 5:15 p.m., on October 13, responded to a call from a resident about a neighbor dispute involving parking.

One of the arguing parties driving a Mercedes SUV began to back away when officers arrived. When ordered to stop, the driver swore at the police and sped off.

Other officers found the Mercedes parked nearby. The driver, a 76-year-old area resident, was located on foot nearby. He appeared to be intoxicated and was field tested. The police arrested the man for driving while intoxicated and failure to comply. No charges resulted from the initial dispute with the neighbor.
