Early warning weather: Saturday brings a mix of clouds, sun and brief showers

A cold front moved across western New York Friday evening, bringing a cold northwest wind in its wake. This flow will create scattered showers and clouds throughout the day and temperatures in the low 50s.

Clouds and rain over Lake Ontario will settle in around lunchtime and continue into the afternoon. Expect scattered, welcome showers with sunshine in between. This won’t dampen your weekend plans too much, but if you’re out during the day, be sure to grab your raincoat on your way out the door.

Cold air rushing in to replace that previous warm air mass can cause some wind gusts. Winds out of the northwest will generally be between 15 and 20 mph, but may gust near 25 mph if stronger surface winds are brought. Lake-effect showers will clear after 6pm, bringing clear conditions but still hunting for any evening activities. Clearing that moisture and clouds will allow overnight temperatures to drop within 30s for the Rochester area and 20s for higher elevations.

Cool air and a breeze are still in place Sunday, with highs in the 50s and gusts up to 25 mph in the late morning through the afternoon. Again, lake effect showers are possible Sunday afternoon as cooler air hits the warmer Great Lakes. However, accumulation will be little, less than a tenth of an inch.

The weather starts to change for the better on Monday as dry air replaces our cold and unstable air mass. Temperatures are expected to stay in the 50s on Monday, but Tuesday brings 60s and finally very warm air Wednesday in the mid-70s.

Warm air is currently holding in for Halloween, with highs in the 70s. However, we’re tracking a cold front that could disrupt Halloween trick-or-treaters Thursday night.
