Claim: Trump canceled second debate, appearances on CNN, ’60 Minutes’ and more

A topic post from October 17 (direct link, archive link) claims that former President Donald Trump recused himself from numerous events in the final weeks of the 2024 presidential campaign.

“Trump Canceled: Second Harris Debate, CNN Town Hall, 60 Minutes, NBC Interview, NRA Rally, CNBC Appearance,” the post read. “Am I missing a few?” It was reposted over 70 times in one week. Other versions of the claim have circulated widely on Facebook, Instagram and X, formerly Twitter.

Trump canceled some of the events mentioned in the post, but never agreed to attend others.

Trump’s campaign attributes some cancellations to scheduling conflicts

The statement came in the middle questions from Democrats about Trump’s age and physical condition for the presidency. politics The Playbook newsletter reported on October 18 that Trump has pulled out of numerous events due to “exhaustion,” his spokesman claims Caroline Leavitt said the press was “unequivocally fake”.

But the list in the social media post is not entirely accurate. While Trump canceled some of the named appearances, others were never scheduled.

Here is a detail:

  • Second debate with Vice President Kamala Harris: A second debate between Trump and Harris was never scheduled. Before President Joe Biden dropped out of the race, he and Trump he agreed two presidential debate – one on June 27 and the other on September 10. Trump declined guests from Fox News and CNN for a second debate against Harris and said he would not participate in any additional debates a September 12 post on Truth Social.

  • 60 minutes”: CBS said both Harris and Trump agreed to interviews for a “60 Minutes” election special, but which Trump later withdrew. Trump spokesman Steven Cheung denied characterization of the network, saying there had been “initial discussions, but nothing scheduled or locked down” in an X post of October 1st. Cheung also said the program “insisted on doing real fact-checking, which is unprecedented.”
  • NBC interview: Trump canceled a scheduled October interview with NBC News’ Christine Romans, the network reported. The network said the Trump campaign said it would reschedule the event, but has not done so since Oct. 18.
  • National Rifle Association Rally: Both the NRA and the Trump campaign said the former president canceled an event with the organization due to scheduling conflicts, USA TODAY reported.
  • CNBC appearance: CNBC’s Joe Kernen said on October 15 that Trump canceled a scheduled appearance on the network because The Hill reported.

Fact checking: Harris called Trump, not Biden, “unstable” in the Fox interview

USA TODAY debunked a number of claims about the events of the presidential campaign, including false claims that Harris withdrew from a Sept. 4 debate with Trump and that Biden pushed back of Trump debate in May.

USA TODAY reached out to the user who shared the post for comment, but did not immediately hear back. Trump’s team did not respond to questions about whether each of the events was a scheduled appearance or about the circumstances of the event’s cancellation.
