City of Edmonton launches assisted snow removal pilot program

People looking for extra help clearing snow around their homes can now apply for assistance from the city this winter.

The two-year pilot program of the Assisted Snow Removal Program aims to help the elderly, disabled or mobility impaired, the city said in a news release.

By helping people clear the snow, the city says it hopes to reduce the risks of slips and falls that can come from uncleared snow.

“Winters in Edmonton can be challenging, especially for seniors and people with mobility issues,” said Chantel Perizzolo, the city’s director of complaints and investigations.

The program is available to low-income seniors, people with disabilities or mobility challenges. They can apply online and must provide a form signed by a healthcare provider to verify that they need assistance.

People already enrolled in other city programs, such as the Dedicated Accessible Transit Service or the Assisted Waste Collection Program, can access a simplified application.

Snow removal will take place 24 hours after an inch or more of snowfall, the city said. The program covers driveways, public sidewalks adjacent to properties. It does not cover driveways or back roads.

Until the applications are approved, the city reminds people that they are still responsible for snow and ice maintenance on sidewalks adjacent to their properties.
