A young divyang from Sikkim sustained serious injuries after he was allegedly hit by a traffic policeman at Gopalpur in Ganjam. The policeman was accused of hitting him directly in the head, knocking him unconscious.

The injured, identified as Wegen Sherpa, has been admitted to Bhubaneswar AIIMS, where his condition remains critical, sources said.

According to sources, Sherpa lives with his friends in Balugaon. Sunday being a holiday, Sherpa along with his friends planned to visit Gopalpur beach. The friends were on their way home after their fun trip to Gopalpur when they were intercepted by the traffic cops.

Suddenly, a traffic policeman allegedly hit the Sherpa with a lathi, making him critical, sources informed.

“Today was a holiday and we came on a fun trip to Gopalpur. We all had fun and were returning home when we were intercepted by the police. However, one of the policemen hit my friend directly in the head. He is badly injured and bleeding. It was senseless for three hours,” said a friend.

Traffic cops or Berhampur police could not be reached for comment in this regard.
