NC State Quarterback McCall retires from football following latest head injury

North Carolina State University quarterback Grayson McCall is retiring from football following a head injury he suffered earlier this month, he announced Wednesday.

“I’ve battled injuries my whole career but this is one I can’t come back from,” McCall posted on Instagram, as reported ESPN. “The brain specialists, my family and I have come to the conclusion that it is in my best interest to close the cramp.”

McCall, who has a history of concussions, was carted off the field after taking a hit to the head on a running play during an Oct. 5 home loss to Wake Forest. He suffered a serious head injury last season while playing for Coastal Carolina.

McCall threw for 10,005 yards and 88 touchdowns in 42 games for Coastal Carolina before transferring to NC State during the offseason. Over four games for the Wolfpack, he passed for 518 yards while throwing three touchdowns and two interceptions.

“While I feel like everyone is being taken away from me, I have a sense of contentment,” McCall said in his post. “Every time my feet hit the grass, I left every gram of me on that court. I always played my hardest and my best because I never knew which game would be my last. I have no regrets about- throughout my career, and that’s something I can be proud of.”

McCall wrote that he hopes to get into coaching now that his playing career is over, according to ESPN senior writer Jake Trotter. “I look forward to taking my passion and love for the game into the coaching space to serve and lead the next group of kids with a dream,” he said in his post.

True freshman CJ Bailey filled in for McCall during the Wake Forest game. NC State (4-4) has a bye this weekend.
